Research has shown that a breed specific diet is essential in keeping your dog healthy and avoiding costly vet
bills. "A breed specific diet ", starts with understanding the diet of a particular breeds ancestors and the region
in which they originated. Just like the German Sheppard’s unique coat, body size and temperament, that has been
handed down from generation to generation so has its nutritional needs. For instance, did you know that a
German Sheppard’s colon is relatively short compared to other breeds with the similar size? Because of this fact,
the German Sheppard requires a high fiber diet to keeps its food in the digestive track longer in order to absorb
the proper nurturance. Use caution when preparing a high fiber diet, too much fiber or the wrong kind of fiber can
cause impact bowels.
The German Sheppard Dog’s ancestry can be traced back to the Alsatian Region of Germany. The primary sources
found in this region for the German Sheppard food were: beef, wheat, cabbage and alfalfa. There for, I would
recommend a blend of this type of food as a good base diet for your German Sheppard. Avoid food that contains
fish, soy, or rice.
Here is an example of a well balanced meal for your Adult German Sheppard food;
*Adjust portions for size and activity level of your Dog.*
-500gms (a little over a pound) of beef, pork, chicken or lamb.
-1 finely chopped carrot
-1 diced small potato
-1 diced celery
-1/2 cup sliced green beans
-1 tbsn Gravox(found in pet food stores)
Place all ingredients into a large microwave safe casserole dish. Fill with water to cover ingredients.
Microwave on high for 10 minutes covered. Stir. Microwave for another 10 minutes on medium.
Let cool and serve.
Occasionally (maybe once a week) I mix in a raw egg, just before serving. The egg really helps, for a
shiny coat.
Note: Many German Sheppard dogs, as well as other breeds can be allergic to plastic food bowls. If you notice a
redness or irritation in the crease of your pet’s lips, try switching to stainless steel.
