Coming Home

As soon as you get your new puppy home, take him/her outside. The stress and excitement of the car ride, new  faces, sights and sounds will prompted him/her to want to go anyway. If you make the first potty experience at their new home outside, so much the better. Not only are you avoiding a mess to clean up but, the more your puppy goes potty outside the more likely he/she will want to go outside to go potty in the future.

The first day of homecoming is a great time to set up the ground rules for your puppies potty behavior.

Take him/her to your designated potty area, and put him/her down.

Let your puppy sniff the area- try not to pet or play with your puppy at this time, you don't want him/her to associate this spot with games or activities. He/She must learn that this part of the yard is for going potty only.

When he/she begins to relieve themselves, say the phrase you want your dog to associate with potty breaks. "Potty outside", "Go Pee" or what ever, short, easy to recognize phrase you want it to be. Be sure to also use voice inflection each time to help your dog memorized the meaning of the phrase.

When he/she is done, make a big deal about what a good job they did. Praise, affection, even a small treat can help reinforce this positive behavior.

When you take him/her inside, it's a good idea to set the ground rules for the house right away. (what area of the house is your dog aloud to be in?...etc.) All to often, new dog owners forget that this new little puppy is going to grow much larger adult dog. Now is the time to prevent future unwanted behavior. If you don't want a 100lbs German Sheppard on your furniture, don't start now.

As far as "house breaking, puppy" goes, create training is widely accepted as the most effective way to house breaking puppy in a short amount of time.

Create Training-What Is It?

Create training is the use of a indoor kennel(create or travel carrier) to confine your puppy when you are unable to properly supervise him/her.

How and why does this work?

Inherently, dogs dislike soiling the place in which they sleep. Because you are restricting your puppies movement and sleeping quarters, he/she will instinctively hold it in until they get out of the create, that is if you don't make them wait too long.

It is very important to get the proper size create. If the create is too big, he/she will be able to use one side of the create for a toilet and the other for sleeping, defeating the whole process.

Choosing the proper create.

The general rule to fallow: Choose a create your dog will grow into. It should be big enough for an adult dog to stand up in without crouching,They should be able to turn around and stretch out. Any bigger and your dog will be temped to use one side for sleeping and the other for their toilet.

Chances are that your new addition to the family is quite smaller than it's soon to be adult size, so you will have to block of the excess space. Use a board or wire grate to reduce the internal size of the create, or you can make or buy a smaller create and replace it as your puppy grows.
